HC Deb 04 March 1997 vol 291 c556W
Mr. Pearson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what requirements there are for the teaching of first aid in(a) primary and (b) secondary schools; and what data she collates on the numbers of schoolchildren achieving first aid qualifications. [18393]

Mrs. Gillan

There is no specific requirement on schools to teach first aid. However, all maintained schools are required under section 351 of the Education Act 1996 to deliver a curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society; and prepares such pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. This can include teaching about first aid.

The Department does not collate information centrally on the numbers of schoolchildren achieving first aid qualifications.
