HC Deb 16 June 1997 vol 296 c34W
42. Mr. Barnes

To ask the hon. Member for Middlesbrough, representing the Church Commissioners, what is the latest position regarding the rebuilding and use of St. Ethelburga's church in the City; and if he will make a statement. [2038]

Mr. Stuart Bell

In March the Bishop of London announced a proposal for St. Ethelburga's to be restored as a centre of peace and reconciliation, providing support for the victims of terrorism and conflict. It would include a memorial garden dedicated to those killed in the two city bombs. The church's facade to Bishopsgate would be re-built and the surviving fabric incorporated in the new building. The proposal would require listed building consent and a scheme under the Pastoral Measure 1983 to authorise the new use. The Commissioners await a recommendation from the diocese of London to draft and publish such a scheme.
