HC Deb 16 June 1997 vol 296 c69W
Shona McIsaac

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has to end the use of misleading nutritional information on food labels. [3514]

Mr. Rooker

Detailed rules governing the provision of nutrition information on food labels are contained in the Food Labelling Regulations 1996. This information is also subject to the overriding requirements of section 15 of the Food Safety Act 1990 which makes it an offence to label a food falsely or in such a way as to mislead consumers.

Responsibility for enforcing these rules rests with local authority trading standards officers, who are being reminded of the need to check compliance in this area.
