HC Deb 16 June 1997 vol 296 c38W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans he has to ensure that public sites owned by British Gas are properly decontaminated before development is allowed on those sites. [3406]

It is the responsibility of local planning authorities, when determining planning applications for land which may be contaminated, to consider whether the proposal takes proper account of any contamination. In certain circumstances, it may be necessary for detailed site investigation or specific remedial measures to be made conditions of the planning permission.
