HC Deb 12 June 1997 vol 295 cc543-4W
Mr. Gerrard

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many DNA tests have been carried out by the British Embassy in Somalia on Somali nationals applying for family reunion in the past five years; and how many of those tests have shown that relatives were not related as claimed. [2978]

Mr. Fatchett

The UK does not have any diplomatic representation in Somalia. Somalia applicants for family reunion apply at the British Embassy at Addis Ababa. We have figures only for Somalia family reunion applicants who have been DNA tested at Addis Ababa from 1994 onwards. They are as follows:

Year Number tested Not related as claimed
1994 44 14
1995 37 13
1996 64 17
19971 42 1
1 So far.
