To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the change in the value of the pound against the basket of international currencies relative to June 1996. [1616]

Since June 1996 the pound (on its trade weighted index) has risen by around 16 per cent. The Government want a stable and competitive pound over the medium term, consistent with its objective of price stability.
