HC Deb 09 June 1997 vol 295 c327W
36. Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will estimate the number of people convicted for the first time of a serious criminal offence since 1 May. [950]

Mr. Michael

The information requested is not available.

The latest figures available are for 1994 and it is estimated that some 2,300 persons were convicted for the first time of a "standard list" offence each week.

Such offences, which include all indictable and some of the more serious summary offences, are listed in appendices 4 and 5 of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, 1995".
