To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has for the management of the Prison Service. [943]

We pledged in our Manifesto to take proper Ministerial responsibility for the Prison Service.

There are no plans to end the status of the Prison Service as an executive agency within the Home Office. But I intend to examine the structure and organisation of the Prison Service and the Home Office's policy role, taking account of the Director General's organisational review which is already under way.
