HC Deb 04 June 1997 vol 295 cc194-5W
Mr. Whitehead

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what plans she has to review the working of current rules governing the consequences of long-term unemployed people obtaining temporary work and then returning to benefits; and if she will make a statement.[840]

Mr. Field

Our New Deal measures will offer new opportunities to the long-term unemployed of all ages. Employers who take on long-term unemployed people aged over 25 will receive a subsidy of £75 per week, and the employee will receive an opportunity to demonstrate both their existing skills and their potential for acquiring new ones.

Over the next few months we shall be looking closely at all the features of the benefit system which might have an impact on work incentives.
