HC Deb 02 June 1997 vol 295 cc62-4W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will include the Leicester Eastern Bypass in the Private Finance Initiative scheme. [1471]

Ms Glenda Jackson

As the Leicester Eastern Bypass is not included in the current National Trunk Roads Programme it would be for the local planning and highway authorities to decide whether to seek to progress a scheme under the Private Finance Initiative.

Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will make it his policy to oppose the building of the Leicester A46/A47 Link Road and Eastern District Distributor Road through densely populated areas of the Leicester East constituency. [1492]

Ms Jackson

As with all local highway schemes, the Secretary of State's involvement with the A46/A47 Eastern District Distributor Road is limited to consideration of applications for their possible funding, through Transport Supplementary Grant (TSG), and the determination of any statutory Orders applications which may be made, by the local highway authority, to enable the schemes to proceed. In both cases, applications must be considered on their merits. That said, the Secretary of State's decision in relation to statutory Orders, made in respect of the A46/A47 Link Road, will be issued very soon. To date orders have been submitted for consideration in respect of the Eastern District Distributor Road.
