HC Deb 02 June 1997 vol 295 c86W
Mr. Drew

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proposals he has for compensation for former prisoners of war in Japanese prison camps. [1515]

Mr. Fatchett

We recognise the great sacrifices made by those who suffered in Japanese prison camps in the Second World War, and share the widespread public sympathy and concern for them. We accept that the question of compensation was legally settled in the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty. Strong feelings, however, continue in this country and we are in close contact with the Japanese Government about these concerns.

Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make it his policy to adopt a social model of disability in framing all future and amending previous relevant legislation and guidance; and if he will make a statement. [1687]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

This Department has a Programme for Action to achieve equality of opportunity for disabled staff. We seek to ensure that our policies take full account of human rights, including those of disabled people.
