HC Deb 02 June 1997 vol 295 c88W
Mr. Gummer

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans HM Customs and Excise have to enforce the ban on furs caught by leghold traps if and when it comes into force. [852]

Dawn Primarolo

In the event of the introduction of an EU wide ban of furs from animals caught by leghold traps, fur imports from third countries will be subjected to regulatory checks by Customs making full use of their electronic entry processing system and to appropriate anti-smuggling activities. Customs' legal powers of confiscation would apply to any furs imported in breach of such a ban just as they do to any other prohibited goods.
