To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department by how much in real terms Government spending on the police force has changed since 1979. [11158]

On the basis of the latest gross domestic produce deflator figures issued by the Treasury, total spending on the police in England and Wales will have increased in real terms by 100.4 per cent. between 1978–79 and 1997–98.
