HC Deb 29 July 1997 vol 299 cc196-7W
42. Mr. Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans his Department has to encourage the transportation of goods by rail as opposed to road. [9392]

48. Mr. Bayley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how he intends to increase the proportion of freight carried by rail. [9398]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The Government want to see a greater proportion of freight go by rail rather than by road. Our White Paper on integrated transport policy, to be published next spring, will consider ways of achieving this objective.

Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will list in percentage terms the movement of freight within the United Kingdom by(a) road, (b) rail and (c) water for each year from 1970 to 1996. [11117]

Ms Jackson

1 The percentages in the table do not add to 100 because of freight movements by other modes, notably pipeline.
2 All goods vehicles, including those under 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight.
3 Figures from 1972 onwards are not comparable with earlier years. From 1972, water includes all UK coastwise and one-port freight movements by sea and inland waterway traffic. Earlier years include only GB coastwise traffic and internal traffic on British Waterways Board waterways.
