HC Deb 24 July 1997 vol 298 c702W
Mr. Streeter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what were the conclusions of the Denver summit in respect of the control of communicable diseases; and if he will make a statement. [9641]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

The Denver summit agreed to promote more effective co-ordination of international responses to outbreaks of infectious diseases and to develop a global surveillance network working through organisations such as the World Health Organisation. There was also a commitment to accelerate AIDS vaccine research, to enhance international scientific co-operation and collaboration, and to ensure that the United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) fulfils its mandate.

We welcome the commitment to improve international collaboration on the surveillance, monitoring, and research of communicable diseases. The UK has a strong record in combating communicable diseases, both internationally and at home, and this work will continue in the future.
