Mr. Beith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many serious incident reports for each probation service in England and Wales during 1996 which involved murder were alleged to have been perpetrated by offenders on(a) community supervision and (b) parole of after-care. [8901]

1. These figures do not include charges of: death by dangerous driving; unlawful killing; child death (neglect); manslaughter; conspiracy to murder; aid and abet murder; arson with intent; attempted murder.

2. Cases where more than one offender were jointly charged with one offence have been counted as one incident; multiple offences alleged to have been committed by one offender have been counted as multiple incidents.

3. Some charges may have been reduced or dropped before or at trial.

4. These figures relate to incidents that were notified to the Home Office between 16 November 1995 and 17 December 1996 about which a management review was subsequently received.
