Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many sets of(a) twins, (b) triplets, (c) quadruplets, (d) quintuplets and (e) sextuplets were born in England in each year since 1990; and how many multiple births in each category were conceived as a result of (i) in vitro fertilisation, (ii) gamete intra-fallopian transfer and (iii) other forms of assisted conception. The information is not available in the form requested. The number of multiple maternities in England for the period 1990 to 1996 is shown in table 1.

Details of pregnancies achieved and births in the UK for the same period as the result of in vitro fertilisation or donor insemination, including gamete intra-fallopian transfer, are shown in tables 2 to 5.
