§ Mr. Robin SquireThe number of pupils in maintained schools in England in January 1996 was 7,370,000 full-time equivalents. By the year 2000, this is expected to increase to 7,596,000.
The Department does not make estimates of class size levels. Class size is determined by the head teachers and governors of individual schools.
