To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the current rolls of(a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools; how much was spent per head in each case (i) in 1979 and (ii) in 1996 in real terms; and if he will make a statement. [11981]

In 1995–96, enrolments in primary schools were 192,747 and in secondary schools were 151,576.

Expenditure per pupil in real terms was £1,020 in 1979–80 and £1,699 in 1995–96 in primary and £1,591 in 1979–80 and £2,523 in 1995–96 in secondary schools.
