HL Deb 27 February 1997 vol 578 c105WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is now their estimate of the total number of refugees and displaced people in each of the following countries: Zaire, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Sudan.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) currently estimates the numbers of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) in Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zaire to be as follows. Up to date figures for Sudan are currently unavailable—I will write to the noble Lord if I receive further information.

Country of asylum Refugees IDPS
Burundi 22,000 500,600
Tanzania 325,000 minimal
Uganda 260,000 160,000
Zaire 2420,000 3500,000
1 UNDP estimate (February 1997).
2 This estimate includes approximately 200,000 refugees in accessible areas and a further 220,000 unaccounted for.
3 Planning figure being used by UNHCR.
