To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will order an immediate inquiry, reporting in public, into the escape of James Mynott from Leyhill prison. [16740]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Michael Stern, dated 26 February 1997: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the abscond of James Mynott from Leyhill prison. In accordance with our normal practice the governor of Leyhill prison has been instructed to conduct an inquiry into the abscond of James Mynott on 14 February 1997. The reports of such inquiries are not normally made public.
