HC Deb 26 February 1997 vol 291 c265W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many schools in each London borough provide specific teaching for children with hearing difficulties; and if she will make a statement. [17589]

Mrs. Gillan

There are five special schools maintained by local education authorities in London which cater specifically for children with hearing impairments—one school in each of Camden, Haringey, Lambeth, Waltham Forest and Wandsworth. The majority of hearing-impaired children are educated in mainstream schools, with specialist support. Records of this provision are not maintained centrally.

LEAs have a duty to place children with special educational needs in mainstream schools where this is compatible with the wishes of parents, the needs of the child, the needs of other children at the school, and with the efficient use of resources. The Government also recognise a continuing need for special school provision where that is necessary and where parents want it.
