To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what assessment she has made of the effectiveness of the assisted places scheme in enabling poorer parents to provide their children with a private education; and if she will make a statement. [16088]

The assisted places scheme gives able children from low-income families the opportunity of an independent education that they would not otherwise have had.
