Mr. Moss

Responsibility for the subject in question has been delegated to the Roads Service under its chief executive, Mr. W. J. McCoubrey. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

McCoubrey, dated 20 February 1997: The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has asked me to respond to your recently tabled PQ about accidents on the Comber Road, Dundonald and the Belfast Road, Comber and proposals to improve road safety on this route. As you are aware, the RUC are responsible for accident statistics and they have provided the following information in respect of road traffic injury accidents on the Comber—Belfast road (from the Upper Newtownards Road junction, Dundonald to the Killinchy Road/Killinchy Street junction, Comber):-

1992 20 0 11 30
1993 15 1 1 25
1994 24 0 14 28

Roads Service intends to carry out a scheme to realign a 350 metre section of carriageway at Barnhill along this route. This work is expected to commence in early summer. A scheme to realign a further section of carriageway between Millmount Road and Peartree Hill is also being considered. This proposal is at a very early stage and no decision has been made as to its position in the minor works programme. I hope you find this information helpful.
