To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs which other EU countries are withdrawing from UNIDO. [16530]

No other EU countries have yet announced their intention to withdraw.

Mr. Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many British private sector consultancy contracts and how much revenue were received from UNIDO purchases and contracts, in the last year for which figures are available. [16534]

Dr. Fox

In 1996, UNIDO had 22 contracts with UK consultants. The value to the UK from purchases and contracts in that year was £5 million.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what consultations were held with British staff of UNIDO about the decision to withdraw. [16533]

Dr. Fox

No formal consultations took place, but EU partners had been aware for some time of UK concerns about UNIDO.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the cost of the United Kingdom's subscription to UNIDO, in the last year for which figures are available. [16535]

Dr. Fox

The UK contribution to UNIDO for calendar year 1996 was £4.69 million.
