To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what has been the cost to the teachers' superannuation scheme of early retirement on grounds of ill health over the last five years(a) in each local education authority and (b) per teacher in each local education authority. [16100]

The following table shows the total cost and cost per teacher from 1990–91 to 1995–96. The costs in each financial year are made up of the lump sum and annual pension paid in respect of new awards of ill health retirement only. The figures cover all members of the teachers' superannuation scheme.
