§ Lord Berkeleyasked Her Majesty's Government:
What environmental and infrastructural problems would be associated with the possible introduction into Britain of 44–tonne lorries.
§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Viscount Goschen)The Government's recent consultation document on lorry weights, a copy of which is in the Library, discusses these issues at some length. The general introduction of 44–tonne, six-axle lorries would have no adverse effects upon the infrastructure because such vehicles would cause no more wear than the 38–tonne, five-axle vehicles currently on our roads.
