HC Deb 13 February 1997 vol 290 c312W
23. Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what he expects to be the cost of the mortgage interest relief at source scheme in the current year; and if he will make a statement. [14195]

Mr. Jack

In 1996–97, the estimated total cost of mortgage interest relief is about £2.3 billion, of which £2.2 billion is given through the MIRAS scheme.

These figures are provisional. They are based on the assumption, by convention, of no change from the current estimated average building society interest rate of 6.43 per cent.
