Mr. Batiste

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress has been made with the initiative to introduce a medal for prison officers recognising exceptional bravery in the course of their work. [14670]

Miss Widdecombe

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Spencer Batiste, dated 12 February 1997: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about introducing a Prison Service medal. Consideration is currently being given to the establishment of a Queen's Prison Service medal. I strongly support this proposal and hope that it will be possible to create it.
