HC Deb 04 February 1997 vol 289 c530W
10. Mr. Connarty

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many new rented housing starts he estimates will be created by(a) housing associations and (b) local authorities in (i) 1995–96 and (ii) 1996–97. [12510]

Mr. Clappison

In England, the Housing Corporation granted approvals to housing associations for 38,700 new rented homes in 1995–96 and 38,900 in 1996–97. These figures include new build and rehabilitation using funding from the approved development programme and local authority housing association grant. Further homes are provided through single regeneration budget funding and housing associations' own resources. Local authorities started around 500 new homes in England in 1995–96 and a similar figure is expected for 1996–97.
