To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the estimated remuneration to be paid to NHS trust chairs and non-executive directors in Scotland for 1996–97. [14299]

It is estimated that the maximum sum payable to the chairmen and non-executive directors of the 47 NHS trusts in Scotland during 1996–97 will be £1,083,975; of this, £848,975 is payable to chairmen and £235,000 to non-executive directors.
A more precise figure cannot be given since vacancies which have arisen during the current year will reduce the total payable. Additionally, a number of individuals decline any remuneration for these public appointments.
