HC Deb 22 December 1997 vol 303 c506W
Mr. Chope

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will make a statement on the circumstances wherein it would be deemed unreasonable for a local education authority to provide a school lunch under the terms of Clause 103 (2) of the School Standards and Framework Bill. [21918]

Ms Estelle Morris

This will be for the local education authority to decide in the fist instance and will depend on the circumstances of each individual case. It could, for example, apply where a child did not turn up for their meal until the very end of the lunch break.

Mr. Chope

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment which local education authorities in England and Wales offer only a restricted paid meals service. [21917]

Ms Estelle Morris

I am aware that the local education authorities for Buckinghamshire, Bournemouth, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Harrow, Hereford and Worcester, Kingston upon Thames, Lincolnshire, Milton Keynes, Northamptonshire, Rutland and Somerset offer meals for sale in some but not all of their schools. Individual schools may make their own arrangements. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales is responsible for education in Wales.

Mr. Chope

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment which local education authorities in England and Wales do not offer a paid meals service. [21916]

Ms Estelle Morris

I am not aware of any local education authorities in England that do not offer a paid meals service in any of their schools. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales is responsible for education in Wales.
