HC Deb 22 December 1997 vol 303 c483W
Ms Walley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he will list those rendering plants in England and Wales currently receiving specified bovine offal and set out for each plant(a) the effluent treatment and (b) the effluent receiving environment; [20339]

(2) what plans he has for additional controls in respect of the discharge of effluent and its disposal routes; and if he will make a statement. [20340]

Mr. Rooker

Those rendering plans in England and Wales currently receiving specified bovine material are as follows:

  • Granox Ltd.
  • Peninsular Protein
  • J. L. Thomas
  • Thruxted Mill
  • Fats and Proteins (UK) Ltd. J. G. Pears
  • Gilberts Animal by-Products.

Controls on effluent from rendering plants are a matter for the relevant regulatory body—the relevant water services company for discharges to sewers or the Environment Agency for discharges to environmental waters, i.e. rivers. Approvals to process specified bovine material are issued subject to any conditions on control of effluent which the relevant regulatory body may judge necessary in individual circumstances.
