To ask the Attorney-General how many of the Crown Prosecution Service staff in England and Wales are legally qualified; and if he will make a statement. [21490]

The Attorney-General

As at 30 November 1997, the Crown Prosecution Service employed 2,093 qualified lawyers. Of those 1,513 (72 per cent.) are employed as solicitors and 580 (28 per cent.) are employed as barristers.
