§ Ms Glenda JacksonBetween 1 January and the end of November 1997 the Vehicle Inspectorate conducted 74,916 exhaust emission spot checks on cars at the roadside; 1,299 spot checks were also carried out on the general mechanical condition of cars, which would have included, where possible, a check on the condition of the exhaust system.
