HC Deb 22 December 1997 vol 303 cc461-2W
Mr. Cummings

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many lone parents are in receipt of the lone parent premium in the Peterlee and Seaham Benefits Agency area. [21590]

Mr. Keith Bradley

The administration of Income Support is a matter for Peter Mathison, Chief Executive of the Benefits Agency. He will write to my hon. Friend.

Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. John Cummings, dated 22 December 1997: The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking how many lone parents are in receipt of the lone parent premium in the Peterlee and Seaham Benefits Agency (BA) area. The information is not available in the format requested. Statistics are collated by BA District Offices. These Districts do not correspond to constituency boundaries or specific geographical areas. The BA's Durham District includes the offices of Durham, Chester-Le-Street, Peterlee, Seaham and Stanley. The number of people in receipt of Income Support (IS) lone parent rate of family premium in the Durham District, as at 30 November 1997, was 9,968. This figure is provisional and maybe subject to change. It should also be noted that this figure does not represent all those lone parents who are on IS, as some who are over pensionable age or who sick may be receiving a higher rate premium, such as a pensioner or disability premium and so do not take up the lone parent rate of family premium. I hope you find this reply helpful.

Mr. Cummings
