HC Deb 22 December 1997 vol 303 cc463-4W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people are claiming(a) disability benefit and (b) lone parent benefit in (i) Coventry and (ii) Coventry, South. [21793]

Mr. Denham

The administration of disability and lone parent benefits is a matter for Peter Mathison, the Chief Executive of the Benefits Agency. He will write to my hon. Friend.

Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. Jim Cunningham, dated 22 December 1997: The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking how many people are claiming (a) disability benefit and (b) lone parent benefit in (i) Coventry and (ii) Coventry South. Information is not available for all relevant benefits in the format requested. The number of people in receipt of Attendance Allowance (AA) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is set out below:

AA DLA
Coventry 6,800 12,000
Coventry South 1,900 3,700

These figures are based on a 5% extract of the caseload at the end of August 1997 rounded to the nearest hundred. The number of people in receipt of Incapacity Benefit (IB) is 9,859 and the number of people in receipt of Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA) is 1,914. The figures for IB and SDA are those in receipt at the end of November 1997 and the figures are for the area covered by the Benefits Agency's Coventry District. The information for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB) is not available in the format requested. The nearest breakdown is for the West Midlands. The number in receipt of IIDB for that area is 25,800. This figure is based on a 10% extract of the caseload at the end of March 1996 rounded to the nearest hundred. The information for lone parent benefits could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. I hope you find this reply helpful.
