HC Deb 22 December 1997 vol 303 c484W
Mr. Levitt

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what restrictions will apply in Britain to the sale of British beef which do not apply to imported beef after 1 January 1998. [20361]

Mr. Rooker

The specified Risk Material Order 1997, which comes into force on 1 January 1998, will require imported beef from cattle over 12 months old to be accompanied by a declaration that it does not contain skull (including brain and eyes), tonsils or spinal cord. Imports from Australia and New Zealand will be exempt from this requirement.

Beef from cattle aged six months or over, which have died or been slaughtered in the UK, must not contain head (excluding the tongue), spinal cord, spleen, thymus, tonsil and intestines.
