§ Mr. MalinsTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to establish the whereabouts of asylum seekers in the United Kingdom whose addresses are not known to the authorities. [21844]
§ Mr. Mike O'Brien[holding answer 19 December 1997]: The onus is on the individual applicant to maintain proper contact with the Home Office: a failure to do so could result in the application being refused for non-compliance with the procedures. If it appears that an individual is likely to abscond, consideration will be given to the use of detention. Those granted temporary admission to the United Kingdom will usually be subject to restrictions requiring them to reside at a fixed address and to report as necessary to a police station or immigration office. Where individuals do abscond, their details are circulated widely and immigration officers are tasked with tracing them.
