HC Deb 19 December 1997 vol 303 c336W
Mr. Laurence Robertson

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will extend the deadline for the submission of self assessment tax returns; and if he will make a statement. [20712]

Dawn Primarolo

[holding answer 16 December 1997]: The statutory filing date for the first self assessment tax returns is 31 January 1998. There are no plans to extend this date.

Mr. Webb

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer in each of the last 10 financial years, how many people filled in income tax returns; and of those how many were(a) primarily self-employed and (b) pensioners. [20993]

Dawn Primarolo

[holding answer 16 December 1997]: Information is not available in the form requested. The total number of returns issued to individuals in the main April issue for each year since 1994, and the number of these issued to people whose main source of income was from self-employment, rent or investment income, was as follows:

Millions
Total of which, main source self-employment, rent or investment income
April 1994 8.05 4.10
April 1995 7.42 4.15
April 1996 7.61 4.25
7.00 4.19

The criteria used to determine the issue of tax returns do not include whether or not an individual is a pensioner, and the numbers of pensioners issued with tax returns is not available.
