HC Deb 19 December 1997 vol 303 cc362-5W
Mr. McCabe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what were the rates of improvement in Key Stage 1 SAT results in(a) English and (b) maths (i) for the schools maintained by the City of Birmingham and (ii) nationally between 1991 and 1997. [18580]

Ms Estelle Morris

The national results for Key Stage 1 in English and mathematics of pupils at level 2 and above are as follows:

Percentage
1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997
English 78 77 n/a 179 180 179 180
Mathematics 78 78 n/a 81 78 82 84
1 Teacher Assessment results as there is no overall test level.

The Department has not published Key Stage 1 results by local education authority (LEA) since 1992. LEAs can, if they wish, publish the Key Stage 1 results for their schools alongside the 1997 Key Stage 2 results they are publishing in January 1998. The Government plan to publish 1997 Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 results for each LEA early next year.

Mr. McCabe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list local education authorities in order of performance in terms of(a) percentage points of improvement between 1996 and 1997 based on pupils' achievement at level 4 and above in Key Stage 2 curriculum tests in English, mathematics and science (i) separately and (ii) taken together, and (b) their actual average scores at Level 4 and above in each of those subjects in each year. [18579]

Ms Estelle Morris

The national figures for pupils at level 4 show improvement between 1996 and 1997 as follows:

Percentage point improvement from 1996 in: Teacher assessment Test
English 3 5
Mathematics 4 8
Science 4 7

The 1996 Key Stage 2 results by local education authority (LEA) area were published in March 1997 and copies placed in the Library. Each LEA will be publishing the 1997 Key Stage 2 results for schools in its area in January 1998. The Government plan to publish 1997 Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 results for each LEA early next year.

Mr. McCabe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list local education authorities in rank order of deprivation, on the basis of the DoE index of deprivation, and providing for each their position in Key Stage 2 results for summer 1997. [18568]

Ms Estelle Morris

The Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions produces several deprivation indexes, including an Additional Educational Needs (AEN) index which is used to estimate the cost of providing a standard level of education service. The AEN index for each Local Education Authority (LEA) for 1998–99 is listed below. Each LEA will publish 1997 Key Stage 2 results for schools in its area in January 1998. The Government plan to publish 1997 Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 results for each LEA early next year.
