To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what estimate he has made of the number of daily commuting journeys(a) to London, (b) to Birmingham and (c) to Bristol in (i)1980, (ii) 1990 and (iii) the latest year for which figures are available. [21772]

The average number of journeys to work per weekday in London was just under 3 million for the period 1992 to 1996. Data are not available for other years, or for Birmingham or Bristol.
