To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many planning inspectors are currently in post. [20943]

Mr. Raynsford

The Chief Planning Inspector, Chris Shepley, is responsible for providing information about the Planning Inspectorate's operational affairs. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from David Hanchet to Mr. Keith Vaz, dated 18 December 1997: The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions has asked Chris Shepley to reply to your Question about the number of Planning Inspectors. As he is on leave I am replying on his behalf. As at 1 December 1997 there were 377 Planning Inspectors: 236 employed on a salaried basis and 141 who were fee-paid.
