HC Deb 17 December 1997 vol 303 c205W
Mr. Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many full time teachers there were in(a) the primary and (b) the secondary sector in 1997; and what estimate he has made of the numbers in each case in 2000. [20099]

Mr. Hain

At January 1997 there were 11,859 qualified full time teachers in the maintained primary sector and 11,925 in the maintained secondary sector. By the school year 2000–01 the number of pupils in the primary sector is forecast to fall while numbers in the secondary sector are expected to rise. The extent to which teacher numbers reflect these changes will be determined by decisions made by local education authorities.
