§ Mr. HainAt January 1997 there were 11,859 qualified full time teachers in the maintained primary sector and 11,925 in the maintained secondary sector. By the school year 2000–01 the number of pupils in the primary sector is forecast to fall while numbers in the secondary sector are expected to rise. The extent to which teacher numbers reflect these changes will be determined by decisions made by local education authorities.
