To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will review the operation of the new model contract for special advisers. [19620]

Dr. David Clark

The new model contract for special advisers was promulgated by the Prime Minister on 19 May 1997. It is kept under review, and will be amended as and when a need is identified.

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what representations he has received on the role of special advisers with responsibilities for Government information. [19627]

As I have made clear in response to questions from hon. Members, this Government have set out clearly in the model contract for special advisers the terms and conditions under which special advisers are employed. We have also published the report of the Review of the Government Information Service which clarifies the role of those special advisers with responsibility for media-related matters. Copies of both documents are in the Library.
