Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what steps he is proposing to take to bring to a conclusion the inquiry into terminal 5 at Heathrow. [20941]

Ms Glenda Jackson

None. The conduct and timing of the inquiry is a matter for the Inspector who has been appointed to advise the Secretary of State on the proposed Terminal 5 and associated applications. The inquiry is currently expected to close in the second half of 1998.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what has been the cost to public funds of the Heathrow Terminal 5 inquiry to date. [20942]

The estimated cost to date of the Terminal 5 inquiry to the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, including its agencies, is about £8 million. It is estimated that the local authorities involved in the inquiry have spent around £6.5 million so far.
