HC Deb 17 December 1997 vol 303 cc206-7W
Mr. Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what is his estimate of the year on year revenue released from abolishing the assisted places scheme in(a) September 1998, (b) September 1999, (c) September 2000, (d) September 2001 and (e) September 2002; [20135]

(2) what is his estimate of the year on year cost of additional teachers as a consequence of abolishing the assisted places scheme in (a) 1998–99, (b) 1999–2000, (c) 2000–01, (d) 2001–02 and (e) 2002–03. [20134]

Mr. Hain

Estimated annual revenue savings in Wales accruing from the phasing-out of the Assisted Places Scheme, for the period 1998–2002, is shown in the following table.

Year Revenue released(£)
1998–99 1,350,000
1999–00 2,150,000
2000–01 2,700,000
2001–02 3,200,000
2002–03 3,750,000
Total 13,150,000

The number of APS pupils in Wales returning to or needing to be accommodated in maintained schools will be small and we do not foresee the need for additional teachers. The likely numbers and associated cost of additional teachers in relation to the planned reduction of infant class sizes is not yet known. The Welsh Office will commence consultation with Directors of Education in January on delivering our class sizes pledge.
