HC Deb 16 December 1997 vol 303 cc148-9W
42. Mr. Bob Russell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans the Government have to encourage local councils to introduce traffic calming measures. [19437]

Ms Glenda Jackson

Traffic calming is already well established in the UK. it is one of the tools used in managing traffic better and in improving road safety. Traffic calming has proved to be effective in constraining vehicle speed and in reducing the number and severity of road accidents, particularly in residential areas.

The Department provides local authorities with guidance and advice on traffic calming measures through our Traffic Advisory leaflets and day-to-day technical advice.
