HC Deb 16 December 1997 vol 303 c144W
10. Mr. Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what proposals he has for a regional assembly for Yorkshire and Humberside. [19404]

Mr. Caborn

Where there is popular demand in individual English regions, we will legislate for the establishment of a directly elected regional assembly— but that is not for the present Parliament.

In the meantime we will build on the arrangements for regional chambers which are being established by local authorities and others on a voluntary basis.
