HC Deb 16 December 1997 vol 303 cc108-9W
Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department what is his estimate of the expenditure by(a) his Department, (b) its agencies and (c) its non-departmental public bodies on overseas travel for (i) 1980–81, (ii) 1987–88, (iii) 1990–91, (iv) 1991–92, (v) 1992–93, (vi) 1993–94, (vii) 1994–95, (viii) 1995–96, (ix) 1996–97 and (x) 1 May to 30 September 1997; and if he will provide a breakdown to show (1) air fares and (2) other expenditure relating to overseas travel. [15255]

Mr. Hoon

Except for the Legal Aid Board— established on 1 April 1989—which incurred £4,215 of such expenditure in 1994–95, expenditure on overseas travel is not monitored separately from other travel and subsistence in my Department and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The Chief Executives of HM Land Registry and the Public Record Office will be replying separately.

Letter from Sarah Tyacke to Mr. Malcolm Bruce, dated 16 December 1997: I have been asked by the Lord Chancellor's Parliamentary Secretary to reply for the Public Record Office to your question about expenditure on overseas travel by the agencies for which his Department is responsible. Our accounts systems are not designed in such a way as to allow this information to be produced without lengthy research. I regret therefore that your question could be answered only at disproportionate cost. Although I stated in answer to a Parliamentary Question tabled in a previous session that the Public Record Office spent £7,708 on overseas travel in 1994–95, my experience of the time taken to produce that figure has guided my reply on this occasion.

Letter from Dr. Stuart Hill to Mr. Malcolm Bruce, dated 16 December 1997: I have been asked by the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department, to reply to your recent question on expenditure on overseas travel. The information is shown below insofar as it is available:
